Why Study and Live in the United States?

Academic Requirements

Entry requirements for a bachelor’s degree

  • Completion of the international equivalent of secondary education in the United States or Canada (Year 12)
  • Acceptable proof of high school graduation in your home country

Prerequisites for admission to a master’s degree

  • Completion of a four-year bachelor’s degree program from a recognized overseas university.
  • If you have a 3-year bachelor’s degree or diploma, you can first complete a qualifying Pre-Master’s program.
  • A TOEFL iBT 79 to 95 score is required for direct enrollment, although an official TOEFL score may not be necessary for ESL and Pre-programs Master’s — see English language requirements.

Financial Requirements

For the first year of school, USCIS mandates that all international applicants provide documentation demonstrating their financial ability to support themselves while studying in the United States.

A Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) will be issued by the school once the applicant has been accepted and can demonstrate sufficient financial support.

To obtain Form I-20, you must provide the following documents:

  • An original or color-scanning of a bank statement is required
  • Applicants must provide a copy of their most recent bank statement, preferably in color, to demonstrate that they have easily available, liquid assets.
  • An English-language bank statement must include an account number, the amount of money you have available in the United States or another currency, and must be signed and dated no more than six months prior to the application date.
  • The bank statement must also include the name of the sponsor or sponsors. a copy of the FSIS form, or the Financial Statement of International Students
  • A Financial Statement for International Students must be signed by the account owner if the funds are not in the name of the applicant (FSIS).

Language Requirements

Depending on the institution and the level of English language study desired, different entrance criteria apply. International applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds are expected to demonstrate proficiency in English, as evidenced by the following criteria:

Passing a standardized examination, an academic English program or passing an approved alternative requirement.

Universities in the US will accept the following English proficiency tests:

  • IELTS – Academic
  • Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – PT and iBT
  • Proficiency in English
  • (CEP) or the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

1. Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Each section of the IELTS must score at least a 5.0, with a total score of at least 5.5.

2. Undergraduate Students

Each section of the IELTS must score at least 6.0. Courses like Teaching and Nursing, for example, require much higher. In order to pass the IELTS, you must get a minimum of 7.5 out of a possible 7.5.

3. Post Graduate School

Depending on the university, the minimal criterion is 7.0 overall in IELTS with minimum of 6.0 in each subtest.
